CA Republican Party Chairman’s Report

Posted By Ron Nehring on April 28, 2009

This weekend I headed up to San Francisco to speak with our California College Republicans at their state convention, wrapping up an extraordinarily busy week at the California Republican Party.  Time is our most precious asset and we’re determined to make the best use of it to put our ideas into action in this election cycle.

  • The CRP Executive Committee successfully met, deliberated, and took action on the six propositions appearing on the May 19 special election ballot.  The CRP Communications and Political Departments took immediate action to begin promoting the action, including putting up a new main page on our website within minutes and alerting the media to our decision.  More than 45 media outlets across the state reported on the steps we took on Propositions 1A to 1F.
  • PropositionsVoter guides promoting our ballot recommendations, and a special web page on the special election, have been added to our website.  As the number of voters drawing information on how to vote from radio and television, more voters are turning to online sources.  The CRP voter guides are serving that rapidly growing audience of Californians who look to the party for recommendations on ballot measures and candidates.
  • Conservative and free market leaders from throughout the country met on Thursday and Friday in Los Angeles for the annual Heritage Foundation Resource Bank meeting.  During the meeting I had an opportunity to sit down with my friend Hon. Ed Meese, President Reagan’s Counselor and Attorney General in his second term.  Mr. Meese served on Governor Reagan’s staff and took the time to explain the exact circumstances when Gov. Reagan raised taxes one time when he first came into office, and how different those circumstances are from what we face today.
  • CRP Regional Vice Chair Jon Fleischman participated in an in-depth panel discussion on new media during the Resource Bank meeting, and new CRP Networks Leadership Committee chair Harmeet Dhillon participated as well.  Harmeet previously served as an associate editor at Heritage.
  • The California Democratic Party met this weekend, no doubt to deliberate on how best to implement bad economic policies.  I found this Sacramento Bee story on the Democratic convention to be particularly interesting: Dispirited, Divided, Democrats (Where there’s Hope) Gather for State Convention.
  • The College Republicans are an essential part of our efforts to build the Republican Party in California.  Younger voters are particularly susceptible to the feel-good rhetoric the Democrats and liberals are so adept at using, and it’s vital for the success of our party that we bring our message of liberty and freedom to voters under 30.  That’s why I was so pleased to see the strong turnout of CR’s at their state convention, drawing as speakers gubernatorial candidates and many other Republican leaders.
