LUCERNE VALLEY – Students gathered at 7 a.m. Saturday for the third annual Walkathon for Drug Free Teens.

Organized by Majority Rules club Advisor Karol Thompson, the students hold the walkathon each year in order to raise money to attend the Western States Youth 2 Youth Conference held at Claremont McKenna College, “as well as to bring awareness to our communities about the good things our teens are really doing in this battle to keep kids of drugs,” she said.

The walk was 10 miles, with some local students choosing to run the entire route, which began at the Lucerne Valley High School and extended down Rabbit Springs Road and up to Pioneer Park.

Community members like Jo Richards and Diane Holland from the Roadrunners and Jimmy James from the Lions Club were on hand at various water stations — about one per mile — to help keep kids and sponsors hydrated on the windy but warm day.

At the end of the walk, students were rewarded with a barbecue lunch at Pioneer Park put on by the Roadrunners.

The event was a success although many teens scheduled to arrive from all over the county were put off due to gusty winds, Thompson said.
