CRP Chairman Ron Nehring Urges Californians to Send National Anti-Tax Message on Special Election Day

Posted By Press Release on May 19, 2009

SACRAMENTO – As Californians go to the polls today, California Republican Party Chairman Ron Nehring encouraged all Californians to send a national signal by rejecting higher taxes and preparing to support tough spending cuts in the state budget battle to follow.

“Californians have an opportunity to send a strong, national message against higher taxes with the rejection of Proposition 1A.  While intended as a spending limit and rainy day fund, the vote on Proposition 1A has become a referendum on the higher taxes its passage would trigger as a result of the recent budget deal.

CRP Recommends“California faces a budget crisis today because our taxes are too high, our state is increasingly uncompetitive in the global economy, and the state’s budget system is broken.  Extending the recently enacted tax increases for two more years will not solve these fundamental problems in state government and should be rejected.

“We expect Propositions 1A – 1E to be defeated today.  Tomorrow, we expect Democrats will continue to push for higher taxes, as they have since the budget deal was passed, or for higher taxes disguised as fees.  We ask all Californians to support efforts in Sacramento aimed at solving the state’s budget crisis through spending cuts to bring the size of state government in line with reality.
