Traditional Values Coalition Applauds California Supreme Court Ruling Defending Prop 8,Will of Voters and Democracy Preserved

Posted By Press Release on May 26, 2009

Anahiem —“The centuries-old definition of marriage and the power of the people’s vote have been affirmed and upheld,” said Rev. Lou Sheldon, chairman and founder of Traditional Values Coalition (TVC). “Today the California Supreme Court has corrected the error of their way and realized that ultimate authority rests with the people of California. The sovereignty of the people’s vote is of value and meaning in California.”

On March 5, 2009, opening arguments were conducted for three lawsuits filed by homosexual marriage advocates seeking to invalidate the recently approved amendment which was Proposition 8. Traditional Values Coalition announced then that it was calling upon all seven justices of the California Supreme Court to respect the will of over seven million voters that approved the amendment to the state constitution that affirmed the definition of marriage to read: “Only marriage between one man and one woman is valid or recognized in California.”

“Today’s ruling is a victory for the state constitution, for the grassroots of Representative Government and for the integrity of the ballot box.  Just yesterday we honored those who paid the ultimate sacrifice with their lives and blood to protect our Democratic freedoms, among them being the right for the people to express their will through voting. Today’s ruling respects that freedom and that right,” Sheldon said.

Today’s actions by the California Supreme Court will have national implications as other states will use this ruling as a guide to determine the fate of traditional marriage in their borders.

“Today I am proud to say that I am hopeful other states will follow the saying ‘As California goes, so goes the nation,’” Sheldon proclaimed. “Regardless of what procedures other states have to govern ballot initiatives, this ruling reinforces the commonly shared principle of voter sovereignty. No state constitution or state republic can survive without the authority of the people directly expressing their will by the vote.

“The vote in November 2008 was a repudiation of the high court’s first ruling that forced same-sex marriages on the people. Justices on the California Supreme Court finally got the message that the constitution is the expressed, written will of the people, that they are not above it and that it dictates to them. They do not dictate to it.”

Sheldon added: “For nine years the people of California have engaged in a war on the traditional family with those wanting to forever redefine it. Twice the people have affirmed their belief that marriage should be for one man and one woman only in this great state. And today the justices of the State Supreme Court have rightly sided with the people. Let us hope this ruling today forever etches in stone the sanctity and definition of marriage for one man and one woman.”
