Large Marijuana Grow in El Dorado Hills
Posted By Press Release on June 26, 2009
El Dorado County – Sheriff’s narcotics detectives located and eradicated a large outdoor marijuana grow in El Dorado Hills. The marijuana was being grown in an area off Salmon Falls Rd, Dorado Ridge Trail and Salmon Valley Lane. The grow area spanned over a 3 mile area on private, State and Federal properties. Detectives located approximately 1 mile of irrigation lines used to supply the marijuana plants with water from remote watering sites, such as dammed creeks.
Narcotic detectives pulled approximately 32,000 marijuana plants. The plants ranged in size but large portions were 6 feet tall. Based on the total number of plants with an average yield of 1 pound per plant, it’s estimated that 32,000 pounds of marijuana was eliminated from hitting our communities. The current street value for a pound of marijuana is $1800; we believe this crop could have been worth upwards of $58,000,000 to the growers and sellers.
Marijuana grows of this type are of always of great concern not only for the safety of the community but the environment. Marijuana growers are very protective individuals and will protect their crops by dangerous means. From an environmental stand point, growers leave behind chemicals which can leach into the soil, erosion can occur from clearing the land and potential for wild land fires increase due to camp stoves and fuel.
There are no suspects in custody at this time but the size and style of the marijuana grow suggests Mexican Nationals are responsible. The Sheriff’s Office would like to thank El Dorado County Fire and California Fish and Game for assisting in the operation as well as several property owners who made this operation a success.
