Posted By Press Release on July 27, 2009

Meg Whitman, Republican candidate for governor, today announced the endorsement of William E. Simon Jr.  Simon, who in 2002 won the Republican nomination for governor of California, will serve as a Statewide Co-Chair and Senior Policy Advisor of the Meg Whitman for Governor 2010 Exploratory Committee.

“I deeply admire Bill Simon’s passionate commitment to California. As a business leader, Bill understands that California’s economic revival depends on lowering taxes and fees, and on rebuilding state government to deliver services in a way Californians can afford,” Whitman said. “As a former prosecutor, he also understands that government’s most important role is to ensure public safety. I’m honored to have Bill Simon at my side as we take on the challenges ahead.”

“Meg Whitman’s success in business grew from her conservative fiscal principles and solutions-based leadership,” said Simon. “Meg believes lower taxes and smaller, more efficient and effective government will generate jobs and bring prosperity back to California. Her beliefs and experience make her the best candidate to lead California’s economic recovery.”

Bill Simon is co-chairman of William E. Simon and Sons, LLC, an investment firm that he co-founded in 1988 with his father, William E. Simon Sr., a former United States Secretary of the Treasury. He also serves as co-chairman of the William E. Simon Foundation and the Cynthia L. and William E. Simon Jr. Foundation, which helps needy children in urban areas through faith-based initiatives.

Early in his career, Simon was an Assistant United States Attorney working for Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who then served as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Simon was chairman of Giuliani’s 2008 presidential campaign in California.

Former Governor Pete Wilson is Chairman of Whitman for Governor 2010 Exploratory Committee. In addition to Simon, the Exploratory Committee’s co-chairs are House Republican Chief Deputy Whip Kevin McCarthy, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack, Assistant State Senate Republican Leader Tony Strickland, Assistant State Assembly Republican Leader Nathan Fletcher and former Assemblywoman Sharon Runner.
