Mavs starter shuts out Quakes in playoff opener

ADELANTO • Steven Hensley pitched a three-hit shutout as High Desert cruised past Rancho Cucamonga 5-0 Saturday night in the opening game of the second-round series.
Hensley worked nine innings and struck out 10 while giving up just one walk. The right-handed starter from Asheville, N.C., finished with a 9-3 record during the regular season with a 4.21 ERA. His WHIP was an impressive 1.18.
Jamie McOwen went 2-for-4 including a two-run homer off Eddie McKiernan. Joe Dunigan was 3-for-4 at the plate with a run and an RBI, while Jeff Dominguez finished 2-for-4.
The Mavs scored two runs in the second as Alex Liddi came home on a throwing error, and Brent Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Dunigan. They extended the lead to 3-0 in the third when Dunigan singled home Carlos Peguero. High Desert capped the scoring with McOwen’s homer in the sixth.
The Mavs and the Quakes will play again tonight at Stater Bros. Stadium at 5:05 p.m. before moving to Rancho Cucamonga for Games 3 and 4 in the best-of-five series.
